November 6, 2021: A Conversation with Hrimfara fra Lough Arrow II

The following conversation took place on today’s afternoon trail ride.

Alys: Winter’s coming.
Hrimmi: It’s already here. The ground is frozen.
A: And there is a dusting of snow on the trail.
H: And look, snowflakes are falling from the sky.
A: Check out the dogs.
H: They’re having a good time, Shadow especially.
A: You glad we got her?
H: Yes, she’s a kind and gentle dog with an old soul.
A: How do you define old soul?

Alys and Hrimmi

H: Those that have them are kind and gentle.
A: Oh.
H: Got a question for you.
A: What is it?
H: Do people really eat horsemeat?
A: Yes, in some places, like Iceland, it’s considered a delicacy.
H: They eat horsemeat in Iceland?
A: I’m afraid so.
H; That’s barbaric.
A: Yes.
H: What’s the reason for this?
A: I’m told that this is done with animals that are culled. It makes for better stock.
H: I think they should cull humans. This would make for better stock.
A: I agree. And feed the meat to dogs.
H: Do dogs eat horsemeat?
A: Yes, but I don’t think voluntarily. Humans put it in cans then label it dog food.
H: Have you ever fed horsemeat to a dog?
A: No, never.
H: Have you ever eaten horsemeat?
A: No, never.
H: Will you ever eat horsemeat?
A No, never.
H: Never say never.
A: There are some things that I am adamant about. I am adamant about the fact that I will never, ever eat horsemeat nor feed it to my dogs.
H: Do you eat other kinds of meat?
A: Just fish.
H: Horses and dogs have souls. I would suspect that fish have souls too.
A: Yes, I think so. But whenever I eat fish, I thank it for giving up its life so that I might remain strong and healthy.
H: That’s good. I have another question.
A: I hope it’s not too difficult.
H: What’s a carousel?
A: Why do you ask.
H: Because I saw you walking around with a book that said carousel.
A: You can read?
H: Tyra told me what the book said.
A: A carousel is like a pony wheel, only the ponies are made of wood.
H: It seems far better to have wooden ponies go around in circles than real ponies.
A: Yeah, the life of a pony wheel pony is not that much fun.
H: So these carousels, tell me more.
A: I’ve just started reading the book. I have, however, looked at the photos and illustrations. Carousels are also called merry go arounds. They’re mainly found at amusement parks. I think of a carousel ride, and I picture ponies. But this book, it has pictures of carousel giraffes, and zebras, and pigs and chickens.
H: Chickens?
A: That’s right. Chickens.
H: Who would want to ride such a thing?
A: Someone who needs a story to tell. As in, today I rode a carousel chicken.
H: Would you show me the picture of the carousel chickens?
A: Sure.
