town at 9 p.m. Pete had a meeting at 10 a.m. Some of the Bright Lights Book Project crew had arrived well before I did. We met in front of the bookcase in the Koslosky Building. The shelves were full of books and there were several boxes of books up against the wall next to the bookcase. I also brought in a few.
I sent Pete to purchase a whiteboard and flowers. Now that I think of it, I did not bring the flowers home
As prepared as I was, I’d not think to bring my collapsible bookcases that I got yesterday.
It wasn’t long before the area we were hanging out in was heavily peopled. No surprise, it is a major thoroughfare. And so, for the next six hours, the group of us cajoled people into taking free books.
This was my major revelation, and it was major. Readers are assisting in defining what this project is all about. And quite clearly, they see this central distribution area, not as a distribution area, but rather, as a book exchange area. So it is a place where people are picking up And DROPPING off books. I have been a bit concerned about this, wondering if the bookcases will become so full that they won’t have room for incoming books. So far, this has not been the case.
We’ll also be putting bookcases in other places. Yesterday we got two more.
Anyhow, the revelation – readers aren’t all keeping books. Rather, they are reading them and recirculating them. This means that I am simply keeping books moving.
With this in mind, I am thinking that a larger space will soon be in order, one which will allow us to store a large number of books for an indeterminate amount of time. More distribution stations are, of course, essential, but the larger space needs to be a priority.
An acquaintance spoke with me today, and suggested several ways related to how we might go about social networking. I don’t have the time for this. I just have my fingers crossed that someone else who has expertise in this area materializes. Fingers and toes are now crossed.
