March 10, 2026: Snowstorm

The snowstorm was supposed to be just a squall, but it has been snowing for some time now; in fact, it’s been snowing a whole day. I’m okay with this. I got to the former banquet room of the historic hotel and did quite a bit of work.

Odd, the janitor supply area was very warm while outside it was quite cold. I worked in there for some time, putting away books – of course, I took off my sweater because of the heat. Then I went outside and put back it on.

Pete and Robert put the first pallet of books going to Kenya in Robert’s truck. The second pallet will go into Pete’s smaller pickup truck. They will take the books to Anchorage on Wednesday.

The books will then be out of my hands. They may or may not get to their destination. I of course hope they do. Just getting the freight logistics down is a major accomplishment.

I remember working with Milena at TOTE – she was then sending books to rural Alaskan villages. I was really impressed with her logistical and packing savvy, and I didn’t think that I’d ever be able to do what she was doing. Amazingly, I did what she did – and was even more organized.

Pete had said that we would not have enough books on hand to send to Kenya, meaning two pallets. I wish that I was now going to pack up more boxes of books and sending them elsewhere because we have more than enough books on hand.

After we finished up today, Pete and I went to the Bleeding Heart Brewery and each had 1 ½ glasses of their specialty beer, Bright Lights, Big Heart.

The Bleeding Heart Brewery is housed in a former commercial garage – it has funky furniture and wall hangings and – two bookcases, one holds children’s books and the other adult books. The books move slowly there – they don’t go as quickly as they do at the Palmer Pool, the Lekker Bakery, or the Big Dipper Ice cream store.

There are numerous tables. We joined another couple our age and discovered that knew a lot of the same people and had a lot in common. The Bleeding Heart is that kind of place.

We stopped at the Big Dipper after we left Bleeding Heart – it was on the way home. I said to Pete that we needed to do this because books in the former banquet room or in the car were not going to end up in the hands of appreciative readers. He agreed. And we got dark chocolate Ice Cream.

I’ve been attempting to find a cure for my headache. The gum infection – I have tried essential oils, Listerine, and Ibuprofen. This has not worked. So today I tried beer and ice cream. No dice. I will on Monday make an appointment with Pete’s acupuncturist and go this route.

Ohh, daylight savings times is almost upon us. No matter for us. We will sleep an extra hour because Pete is a night owl and we do not get up early.
