No, this time the new members were very congenial. One old member was not so congenial, but I don’t foresee this indefinitely.
Lawrence, our volunteer coordinator, put together a power point presentation in which he talked about day-to-day operations. I don’t know what the other board members thought of this. I liked how invested this individual seemed to be about the BLBP.
Then after this meeting the fun began in earnest. The boxes that were ready to go to Kenya needed to be moved to the literacy annex. And the remaining books needed to be boxed up. Lawrence and Vicki gave me a hand for a while, then left. I was left to work with Scott who has a learning disability, or so he says.
Scott has (he says) a learning disability but offered little more information than this. His head is way up in the clouds. He is going to Juneau tomorrow to do some political lobbying. His scope of ambition actually exceeds mine – he says he’s going to introduce a bill to the legislature in which he’s proposing that car use be banned.
He also wants to get a conference on disabilities going, one in which 20,000 people will attend. Interesting that if no one blocks the brain pathways, then all things become possible.
So we worked together boxing books, sealing them, and making a numbers sheet, writing the weight on the sheet. The task went very slowly because Scott needs to have someone around in order to show him what to do. I didn’t show it, but I grew impatient because I knew that I could go faster on my own.
Done is done, but not quite. At about the time in which I started to pack books, Pete and Robert went to Anchorage, to the airport, and came back with a near equal number of boxes of books.
The pair came back with a very full truckload and stored them where I had previously kept the boxes of books going to Kenya. I unpacked some of the books – they will be excellent bookcase fodder.
So it was a matter of books in, books out.
Visited friends this evening and had a good conversation about many things. However, in writing this dispatch I am paying the price.
