July 4, 2026: I will run no race before my time

I once saw this on a tee shirt. I was then running in the Seattle Marathon. This gave me something to think about as I was shuffling along.

I would now like to be running. If my foot ever gets better, I will resume this activity. For now, I must run vicariously, which is not a whole lot of fun.

Today, July 4, Mt. Marathon took place in Seward. I watched the junior race on You Tube. A neighbor, 14 year old Wren Spangler, won the girl’s junior division. Her brother, Raven came in fifth in the boy’s junior division. The junior course is half the full adult course. You’d think half the distance it would be half as rigorous. No, it is a very steep uphill and a very gnarly downhill.

Wren is most likely getting more publicity than Raven, and I suspect he would like to have similar accolades.

I also looked at footage of those in the women’s run. One woman, who was sitting on a five gallon bucket, had blood oozing out of her right knee. I saw this, and I thought, this is something I’d like to do.

Maybe next year. I am not sure what’s wrong with my left foot. If it isn’t better at the conclusion of Summer in the Park(s), I will get it checked out. Time of course will be of the essence. I am going to have more time when this program is over, yes, yes. And by then we’ll have found another staff person.

I can envision this individual – she’ll be a librarian or have worked in a bookstore. She’ll be easy to work with, and not overly chatty. When the word librarian came to mind, I realized that it will be possible to find someone who can easily assist me in doing what I’m doing.

Maybe she’ll be a runner. Or better yet, she’ll live nearby and own Icelandic horses. This is of course really pushing the envelope.

Do animals envision what they are wanting and needing? I think so.

I did get two rides in today, one on Hrimmi and one on Tyra. The latter was with Pete. We took Shadow with us and left Ryder at home. It was slightly overcast, and humid but nevertheless a great day for a ride.

I am going to try using a bit on Hrimmi because she loves to graze and it is difficult for me to convince her otherwise. I will first take her out on the road and let her get a feel for it. I also have a grazing muzzle, but this is a last resort.

Tonight, I worked in the raspberry patch and took out the canes. This made me realize how much time and energy Pete the gardener has been putting into this place.
