June 17, 2026: Me? Lucky?

Yeah, I guess so. My response to my own question is that I am too tired to make a fair assessment. I have gone to bed late and gotten up early two nights in a row. Tonight, coming home, I nearly went off the road on Buffalo Mine Road, which towards the turnoff onto Murphy, is windy and twisty.

But I made it home safely, which in itself is a form of luck.

Tonight, as I was cleaning the horse pen, I realized how lucky I am. The horses were grazing peacefully; the sun was shining on Hrimfara in such a way as to make it look like, in the front, she had a gold outline.

Tyra’s poop is a bit more solid.

Raudi suffered no ill effects from having her hoof caught in the fence.

I heard the sound of birds as I was cleaning up. Today, talking to Susie, who used to be on the VCRS board, was insightful. She said that the Mat-Su birders might be interested in doing a Summer in the Park(s) presentation.

Lucky, lucky, lucky. More lucky.

Kora and I did the bee unit in preparation for today’s outdoor lesson. The lesson went really well. Linda Jo Kleppervich was “Bee a Reader,” and as such, she read a story about honey bees. She was loud, ebullient, engaging. Pete said that she’d been a school teacher for 30 plus years.

It occurred to me later that Linda Jo’s seemingly loud performance was a part of her act. After all, she was the queen bee. Well, she had it down. The children who gathered around her were enthralled.

We’ll see if Linda puts in an appearance tomorrow.

I got back to the hotel and entered the former banquet room of the historic Eagle Hotel. There were maybe five volunteers and two staff present. Good volunteers, really wanting to help out. Then three more appeared.

I’m having a hard time writing this dispatch because I am so tired. I keep falling asleep at the computer.

The volunteers, all with the exception of one, were experienced volunteers – the inexperienced volunteer worked with an experienced high school volunteer. They didn’t do much work, but that’s okay. The former banquet room of the historic Eagle Hotel is a good place for students of all ages to work.

So many were working that my working didn’t matter. I just bounced from person-to-person making small talk. Then, when they all left, it was quiet and I got more work done. Tonight, this was what I preferred.

Tomorrow is shaping up to be a good day. I think that there will be just one volunteer present. And later in the afternoon, my friend Cathy, who is our artist in residence, will come to the former banquet room and grace us all with her presence

Back to the idea of being lucky – yep. I got off track here, but I do think that I’m lucky.
