May 29, 2026: May, a Month of Waiting

May really is spring, but it didn’t seem like it because it was so cold. Now the trees are in bloom, and the other day, while at the Palmer Pool (delivering books), I found some dandelions. The wild geraniums are now visible, and soon they will be in bloom. And the air now smells so good.

The only thing that’s missing is the swallows; they used to nest in the box outside our bedroom window. The robins, very hardy, they are back and having a good time. I have not seen any sandhill cranes or geese, but others who are trustworthy have seen them.

The weather was extraordinary today, for a better part of the day, it was sunny, slightly breezy, and almost warm enough to sunbathe.

It was our third week of being a visible presence at Friday Fling, in the side yard of the Palmer Visitor’s Center. Five of us had a very good time, parting company with Kid’s Kupboard lunches, Bachelor Button Plants, and Books.

And Sharon Peek came and did dancing with the children and the adults. She’s 80 years old and still going strong. And she knows how to put together the right music and dance moves. Once again, I was very impressed.

I did succeed in assisting children in making the mind/body connection. Those dancing, though, seemed to me that they were the ones who had already made this connection. The one’s walking past, zombie like – they are the one’s who need this sort of activity. We’ll see on Monday and in the days following if we can assist others in making this leap. This is the goal.

Honestly, I am every time more wonderous in thinking about this project, what it was and what has become. If tomorrow we had to shut the doors I would be despondent. But on the other hand, I would feel a sense of satisfaction from having accomplished something major and having made the world a better place.

But here is now. There was today and there will be tomorrow. I am going to Sutton to pick up books. Next week, we’ll be getting books from the Anchorage Library, Kodiak (via the Anchorage airport), and from the Mat-Su School District. And the books that we have on hand, they are going as fast as they can be distributed.

I got home late, so I was not able to go for a horseback ride. Tomorrow is going to be a short day in the former banquet room of the historic Eagle Hotel because I did so much today.

It did not rain until this evening. It is not supposed to rain next week. It does have to rain sometime. To travel on Murphy Road, which is not paved, is like traveling in a moving dust bowl.

Puppies on the brain. A lab was brought into the hotel. A very well behaved puppy. And I thought, if I got a puppy, I would bring it into the hotel every day. If this is not supposed to be, this is not supposed to be.
