May 18, 2025: Balance Indeed

I came up with this header tonight, as I was outside raking up yard detritus – loose hay, leaves, manure, sticks, so that the place will look half way decent on Wednesday when Zach Kaiser, our veterinarian, comes to do spring appointments.

Zach had said that he did not know of any others who like us, feed their horses when he comes to examine them. I didn’t say it, but having food around relaxes them. The mess though – he might think, and rightly so, that Tyra’s loose poop has in part been due to the fact that when I let her out (I let them all out, early on and later in the day), she does nibble on the crap. I don’t want Zach to think that this is the case.

Anyhow, today. I spent this morning working on Shelf Life. The easy part is over and the hard part has begun. I am now in the thick of revising Part 2, the Meeting House. I am not very far along with it, so it’s requiring extensive revision. I have just enough material on hand to jog my memory. Part III, I have hardly anything. But unlike the first two parts, this one is closer in terms of time, so hopefully, my memory will serve me correct.

I’m about 150 pages into it. It goes really well when I work in the mornings. I don’t see how people can write later in the day.

Pete is my hero. He gave me an assist today, figuring out the BLBP volunteer coordinator list. I would not have been able to do this myself. He didn’t bitch about this being too much work – I looked over his shoulder as he did this.

I spent the afternoon and early evening riding all three horses. They moved slow but were chipper, most likely because it was nippy out. (And the mares, they are always nippy.)

I worked with Raudi on her canter – I noticed when I tightened up her left rein and bumped her with my right leg, that she immediately, from a walk, picked up a very nice rocking horse canter.

I checked out the Big Bear Eagle Cam today. Two large, immature eagles will in the next week, fledge. One of the birds, Gizmo, is big, strong, and healthy. The other, Sunny, is smaller and perhaps less healthy. Like most who’ve been watching these birds mature, I wish that I could see what becomes of them.

I also watched yesterday’s Preakness Stakes. Journalism won, in an amazing stretch drive.

Althogether, another good day at home.
