April 20, 2025: Balancing Acts

I think that finding a balance is hard work. Most definitely, it requires single minded intensity of focus. I don’t think that one day you get up and you got it. I think that finding a balance is ongoing work. We’ll see.

Today, more of a balance than most days. It was a beautiful pre-spring day. The grass isn’t yet green, nor are the leaves on the trees, but the days are now long and the sun is often shining. I am determined (and this is that balance thing) to get out as much as I possibly can and as often as I can.

I took Raudi for a ride, or she took me for a ride – I’m never sure – mid-morning. I took both dogs and decided to do our trail system backwards. We went up Jim’s Road and then cut over to Siggi’s Trail, then did Tin Can. It broke up the monotony of again going the other way. The trail is now really soggy, but in a few days it will harden up.

I got back and then went to the hotel (yeah, it’s Easter Sunday), and there I got Bill’s books ready for distribution. Someone had dropped off two boxes of books, so I cleaned them and put them in his boxes. Simple, fast, easy.

Pete soon arrived, and together we went to Anchorage and spent the afternoon with our friends Judy and Brian and their neighbor Steve. Judy made an incredible holiday dinner – desert consisted of a pumpkin pie made by Pete and cheesecake, made by Judy.

After, we went for a walk on Brian and Judy’s nearby trail system. It was a combination bicycle/hiker trail. The bicyclists predominated – it was distracting, constantly having to hop out of their way. After a bit we crossed a bridge and found ourselves walking alongside a busy road.

All this, and I thought, I am really spoiled. I live well off the main drag where there is minimal traffic. We are also close to a trail system, and although it is just a few miles in length, its quiet and relatively unpeopled. The terrain going straight up to the bench is now torn up, but we do have our own routes.

Pete and I drove back to Palmer, and he dropped me off and I got ready to do today and tomorrow’s distribution. I put books in the Bugge Park and Amoosement Park Little Libraries then came home. Tomorrow I will get to the other places on my route.

It was by now 8:00 p.m. I decided to get Hrimmi out for a ride. In the past I would have blown it off, but I had two more hours of daylight left – and I thought, I am seeking that elusive balance.

I would have ridden Tyra, but she still has the splats.

It was a good ride – Hrimmi doesn’t like the boggy parts of the trail so rather than fight her, I got off and walked her through them.

Oh yeah, I forgot. Today was Easter Sunday.
