I can’t believe that I am driving in this crap. I hardly gave it any thought this morning, when I got in the car and drove to town. My first stop was the Palmer Post Office. I got an orange slip yesterday, which indicated that I had 8 boxes of books waiting for me. It used to be that you had to wait in line before picking up your packages. Now there is a separate pick-up area. I had to wait five minutes to begin the negotiating – a woman with a child in a carrier and one that was ambulatory were by her side. I then watched as she got her package, then attempted to figure out how to carry it and the child carrier to her car.
I was judgmental. This came back to bite me in the ass. The clerk, young, with a long face and a baseball cap, went to pick up my order. He returned with a dolly, and on it, four boxes. My heart sank as I saw the load; it consisted of four 50-pound boxes. I struggled with the dolly, getting it balanced was near impossible. Ho ho and mo ho, people held the door for me. And I got the top two boxes in my car, which I’d parked in the handicap spot. A not so ethical, but good move.
A man saw me struggling and gave me an assist. The second time around I left the post office with two boxes on the dolly. A woman saw me struggling and she gave me a hand, loading the two boxes, and then the other two.
I drove to the hotel and unloaded five boxes onto the BLBP hand cart. I got them inside, then went outside for the other three boxes. A tall, very kind fellow gave me an assist unloading the books then when I told him about the Bright Lights Boo Project, he said that he and his daughter often went to the various bookcases and picked out books.
Wow. I went and distributed books at Iditawash, Alaska Family Services, The Palmer Senior Center, the Borough Building, and the DMV, then returned to the hotel and began unpacking the books. I got them into the lidless boxes right before volunteers arrived.
I am not only productive, I am efficient. The question is now, where am I going to get books for next week?
