September 7, 2023: My Lucky Month, My Lucky Day

Although, this year, this month, this day, I didn’t feel as lucky as I usually do. Usually, the sun is shining, but today it was overcast and on and off rain. Always, I did remind myself, rain is okay in that it reduces the danger of fire.

The sun was shining when I got up. Then it started to rain, so I decided to forego going for a ride and instead go to town and get some book sorting done. Well, I got there and with considerable dismay realized that the parking lot was filled with construction equipment. I parked where I usually park, next to the building.

Moving the dumpster

I parked in my usual place and Atli, the owner of the Historic Eagle Hotel, said that I was going to have to move my car. I didn’t argue with him for a large piece of equipment was moving into the space between my car and the building. I quickly got my book bins out and into the building; then, as I was moving the car to an adjacent parking lot, I noticed that the newsprint box that I’d set outside the door was beside the door. I removed the books, then moved it into the restaurant area workspace.

I then went inside the building and for the rest of the day did what I needed to do; in the meantime, I kept myself amused by watching the activity going on outside the windows.

The construction crew had pushed the top layer of asphalt to the edge of the parking lot and was putting down more gravel. There were, in addition to the requisite dump trunks, other machines that moved the gravel around. And there were compactors – these small steamroller like things pounded down the gravel. This made the floor shake.

The most entertaining part of the show was when three guys attempted to move the very full large green dumpster. I think that moving it was an afterthought because the process of doing this began after most of the gravel had been spread. One of the men did the work and two watched. The hands on guy put heavy chains on the topmost edges of the dumpster and signaled to the guy with the lift mechanism to lift it. The dumpster was then moved out into the street. It was in the same place after I left.

And when I left, the beep beep sound continued to reverberate in my head.

Later, Pete and Robert, the Bright Lights Board president, appeared. Robert, in particular was pleased because he said that the parking lot will be much improved when we have our open house on September 15th. Me, I am not as optimistic as Robert, for I foresee that if it continues to rain that the noise and lack of parking will put a damper (no pun intended) on our open house plans.

I must put this thought on my mental back burner, for I still have a lot to do before next Friday, the day of the open house.

Next: 246. 9/8/23: A good day
