February 1, 2026: Moonlight Ride

Sort of. A part of the early evening horseback ride was during the sunset. And a part was in the moonlight. I got home at 5:00 p.m., and Pete the motivator was finishing putting the tack on the horses. I ran up to the house, got my barn coat, and returned to where Pete, Raudi, and Tyra were waiting. I got my helmet and joined them.

It was a good walk to the trailhead and a good ride on the trails. The path that we had previously made on the trail held up – as Pete noted, the horses were careful to step in the previous hoof holes, meaning that they weren’t really further opening up the trail.

My left boot did not fit in my stirrup, so I had to work at keeping my balance. Raudi was feeling good. She’s been coughing some but did not cough when I rode her or when she exerted herself.

All I can say about her is, what a great horse. She thinks that I think that everything she does is my idea, and I think that she thinks that everything she does is her idea. It’s a complicated but good relationship.

The worst of winter may be over, and all the animals seem to be in good shape.

I need to clean the goat pen. This is on my mind.

Maybe tomorrow. This is my common refrain.

I did go and spend time today in the former banquet room of the historic Eagle Hotel. Pete stayed home, and so my support person was not there. I again felt like a human ping pong ball as I bounced from person to person, volunteer to volunteer.

Scott, who is moderately disabled, showed up first. I put him to work stamping books. The two high schoolers showed up next. I put them to work packing up books to send to Kenya. My friend Sharon showed up next. I talked with her some about some recent health issues that she and her partner Harry are experiencing.

Then Stephanie, who is a Mat-Su Borough Assembly Member, showed up. Turns out she takes dance lessons with Sharon, so they talked for a while. Then Stephanie talked with Scott, maybe about his upcoming plans. He’s going to Juneau and talking with legislators.

So there was a lot going on for a while. Robert and Scott broke up boxes and took recycled books and boxes to the recycling center, for which I was very grateful. There were many, many boxes in part because Recycling for No Reason brought in so many books this past week.

The high schoolers kept working – they did not say anything about their attempting to find shippers for the books going to Kenya. Their world is that of high school students. It is very narrow, as the world of most high schoolers is.

So I am going to have to really work at finding shippers this upcoming week. And how do I feel about this? Of course, I wish that I was instead going for moonlight rides.
