October 4, 2026: The Insomnia to-do List

I seem to be coming up with these lists with increasing frequency. Not a good thing. They make sense at the time, so I should get my lazy ass up out of bed and attend to the lengthy list of items. But no, I continue to lie in bed and add to the list.

The odd thing is, that when I get up, many of the listed items are inconsequential. But then again, some are consequential. Then, most troubling, some are forgotten. If I didn’t have a partner who would first scoff and then get highly irritated about my turning on a headlight and writing things down, I’d do this. And I’d either fall back asleep or continue, every so often, and add to the list.

Between getting to, and working on the items on the list, a time span at the most three hours, I get incredibly anxious. I wonder of course, if I will be able to address them all.

This morning, I awoke and got up and cleaned the horse enclosure. In this space of time, I recalled that the most important things to get done were: 1) Write my Make a Scene article, which is due October 10, next Saturday, and 2) With Pete, put together my PowerPoint presentation for Tuesday’s ROCK Mat-Su presentation. 3) Talk with an individual who has offered to write a grant for us – the deadline is Monday, October 12. I also had a handful of emails to answer. I decided early on to stay home today. More gets done when I do this.

As I was pen cleaning, I had an ah ha moment. I could put together a presentation about Leslie and my literacy revitalization efforts. Then I could draw upon this in writing my Make a Scene article. We human beings tend to complicate things, which is what I did – by speculating about my reversing this order.

I then commended myself for coming up with a solution in which I killed two stones with a third. I also liked the fact that I recognized this as being self-composing process related.

I started out by first working on the presentation. I hurriedly made an outline, one in which I included two cartoons. I then copied it over and set it aside. The majority of my time was then spent on the Make a Scene article. It turned out to be related, but not exactly like the slide show.

Tonight Pete gave me an assist in doing the PowerPoint formatting. During the day, I envisioned two more photos going in. Pete is very good at this sort of thing because he has students in his public speaking class do this. I was, as I watched him, rather in awe – his fingers fly over the computer keys and words and photos appear on the screen.

There’s still more to do on both. I am going to let the Make a Scene article sit for a day or two, then go back and revise it. And Pete will (if he hasn’t already) scan my illustrations into the text.
