August 18, 2026: Lost and Found

Lost: A dental bridge and one canine tooth. They are now a part of a retainer that I am to wear in order to hide the fact that I am missing two front teeth and another resembling a vampire’s incisor.

Yesterday I went to the dentist thinking that he’d determine that the front bridge needed readjusting. This was not the case. He said it needed to come out and that my front canine, which was just a nub, also needed to come out.

I didn’t understand the part about the front canine coming out. I thought he was talking about taking out my incisor.

Dr. Gurr did what needed to be done – and this seemed fairly quick. What was not quick was waiting for the retainer to be made. All total, I was in the dental chair for five hours. While waiting, I read a book in its entirety by Natalie Goldberg. Now, if I had my druthers, I would have read another book. Thank dog I had a book. And thank dog that this one held my interest.

I got out of the dentist’s office at 3:00 p.m. I had made a mistake in thinking that the incisor instead of the canine would go. This changed my plan. I was originally going to get a bridge, but when I realized that the untouched canine would have to be filed down, I opted to have two implants put in instead. Yes, this is what I am going to do. In the meantime, I have a retainer that I will wear and take out when I’m eating.

Found: My cellphone. I kept looking for it. It’s a good thing that I finally told Pete about this because, as he’s done in the past, he found it. which is black and was on the middle shelf of the restaurant cart, which Pete uses in categorizing nonfiction books in the former banquet room of the historic Eagle Hotel and I use in categorizing children’s books in the Wayback Room.

When he handed it to me, my thought was that, no, I hadn’t lost it. I just put it in a convenient and logical place and then forgot about it. This is not because I was absent minded, but because I was at the time, undoubtedly thinking about something else. I do not recall what this something else might be.

I got back to the hotel after being at the dentist’s office and thought wow there’s not much to do here. Then, after Pete and Leslie went to the state fairgrounds equestrian center cabin, I looked around and saw that there was still plenty to do.

I stocked Bill and the Palmer Senior Center boxes, and then I categorized incoming boxes. Then I started sorting through stuff that I’ll be taking to the fairgrounds. I’m about ready to move this stuff in the direction of the fairgrounds.

Lost and found. I don’t want to part company with any more teeth, nor do I want to part company with my cell phone. It’s all or none with the latter. We all have to part company with them, or none of us do.
