August 15, 2026: Mid Month

Watch August whiz past. I’m working at slowing it down some. Not doing very good with this. Today I boxed up books in preparation for the upcoming Alaska State Fair. I was able to get quite a bit done as I worked exclusively in the Wayback/Literacy Annex. This was because Leslie and Pam were working in the former banquet room of the historic Eagle Hotel.

That Leslie is now working so hard and diligently – I am now having just a bit more free time. And what did I do with my free time today? Of course, I took all three horses out for a ride.

I first took Raudi out, did our trails. I don’t fully have the piece of the puzzle yet, but there may have been a reason why she decided to take a short cut home the other night. There was a moose carcass in Murphy Creek, across the street from the trail head, in the creek. Poor thing had its head still on – it was a female. The hunters are only supposed to be taking males with antlers.

Our trails have been trashed by the ATVers. I tried to speak to one going up to the bench and in response he said “fuck you.” Now when they do this, I think MAGA and Trump. And I wonder if the world will ever be a better place. Hard for me to deal with angry white males because they have nothing to be angry about.

I next took Hrimmi out – I continued our on the road training – she went for grass just a few times – she’s listening a lot better to me. Backing nicely too. I knew that there had to be a kinder, gentler way, and this was it.

I lastly took Tyra out – I rode her with Tinni’s old bareback pad. We did just fine. We did Siggi’s trail, going uphill. I will take her out on the other trails, which have ups and downs in the next few days. This is a horse that is always up for an adventure, and I hope that there are more.

Speaking of adventures – Pete left today for the Kenai Peninsula. He called tonight and said that he dropped off the books. He also said that in time they may need more. I was left thinking, yes, I did it. I really did. In a week, I packed up 100 boxes for their library. And they are going to need more.

Pete said that Jason, the principal, is going to have the high schoolers unpack the books. And I said, right there, that’s literacy work. This was a very ambitious effort, and I hope that if they need more books that we can get them to the school. This is what library revitalization is all about.

Pete took Shadow down to the Homer Spit, which he said was very crowded. She drank the salt water and decided it was not for her. Love Pete. Love that dog.
