June 1, 2026: A Conversation with Hrimfara

Alys: Hrimmi, I have been thinking all day about the wonderful ride we had yesterday.
Hrimmi: Yes, it was good.
A: I so enjoyed myself. And enjoyed the fact that not once did you dive for grass.
H: It was very difficult, not going for the greens.
A: But you did it. Did all the road work have anything to do with this?
H: Not really. I just had a very full belly.
A: Will the next ride be as pleasant?

H: There are no guarantees. This is the time of year when the grazing is the best.
A: Eh, you think this from spring to fall.
H: Well you think about it, there’s only two months of good grazing here.
A: This is very true. But you are also being let out to graze on the property morning and night.
H: True. But already, the three of us have grazed down the property.
A: Yes, I know this. You know, if I could have anything at all in the world, anything at all, it would be more pasturage for you mares.
H: And where would this be?
A: Not here in Alaska. Not unless we purchased a very, very large piece of property. I would like to live in Homer – there we could ride on the beach.
H: I would love to ride on the beach. Then I could also sample seaweed and kelp. I hear that both are good for you.
A: Yes and have lots of iron.
H: And lots of salt.
A: What else would you like in life?
H: Just like Tyra and Raudi, I’d like to have a foal.
A: We’d need a larger space for this.
H: This place is small, but I was born here.
A: And we took you out with Signy, your dam, every day after you were a few days old.
H: And I was just a few weeks old when you took me up to the bench.
A: Yes. And if you had a foal, I’d do the same again.
H: I was fine with the way you raised me. And I’d be fine if you raised my foal the same way.
A: Are you glad to see it’s spring?
H: Oh yes. I like the warmth. I like the daylight. I like the smell of the leaves. It’s all good.
A: Do you think that Raudi and Tyra feel the same way?
H: I know they do.
A: Do you converse with them?
H: All the time.
A: When?
H: Usually when we eat.
A: Could we do anything different around here?
H: We love going out together. No one likes going out alone.
A: There are just two of us riders.
H: You can pony me. I’ll be a model horse.
A: I’ll talk to Pete about this.
H: When will we be doing another trek?
A: I need to find someone to take on the book project.
H: Keep looking.
A: Yes, that’s the plan.
