June 21, 2026: Celebrating the 2026 Summer Solstice

It came, it went, too quickly in my estimation. I celebrated by being outside most of the day. This was with the realization that tomorrow, there may be 5 seconds less daylight.

I didn’t go in to the hotel. Once again, I realized that I get more done around here on the days that I stay put.

I began my day by cleaning the horse pen and then leaving buckets, shovel, and rake in the pen. I had stopped working in order to put the horses back in the enclosure. Pete later told me what happened. This is a further sign that I am no longer adept at holding a thought. At this point in time, I think that I need to focus on being more mindful.

After breakfast, I resumed working on the essay that Skye (math tutor) and I are co-authoring. I feel that I made progress, although I have a ways to go on my end. And this being an ideas day, it occurred to me that I might have this article be the piece that accompanies Shelf Life’s proposal, and I might have it as the end chapter. This will motivate me to return to working on Shelf Life: A Book About an Overabundance of Books.

I was in the zone while working on this, which is a good thing. It’s the place I most like being. After, I began thinking about the BLBP and my future role in it. I foresee having an executive director, an operations manager, and last but not least, a literacy coordinator. I began thinking about the latter when a specific person came to mind. And this thought was prompted by my talking yesterday with the owner of the Palmer Art Café – she said that she did come in and clean books, but that she had hoped to do something else. No other options materialized. Well, we have a person who is now cleaning books who actually might be interested in being a literacy coordinator. Perhaps I will talk with her tomorrow.

I finished working on the essay at 1:00 p.m. and went outside and cleaned the tack room, which had become the pantry domain of mice and squirrels. The latter got into a bag of packer pellets and had (it seemed) a wonderful time stashing at least half a 50 pound bag in various places, including the space behind the saddles. I had picked up the half that previously had fallen to the floor. And today I picked up the remaining half and as well swept up the mice turds that the mice left in their wake.

This done, I cleaned the horse trailer. Of course, many things, including my Wyoming hat, surfaced.

I next cleaned the outhouse, which was an equally onerous task.

And I took care of the goat and chicken enclosures. I let the chickens out – I peered around the corner and saw all three, close together, rolling in the dust. It looked like they’d found themselves in chicken heaven.

And this being the solstice, I first took Tyra for a ride, then took Raudi for a ride. I would have taken Hrimmi, but I still had to clean the enclosure.
