April 25, 2026: Sunny

I agreed to go to this event, as a vendor, outside Karma Café where we have a bookcase. It was held in a parking lot, at the edge of the very busy Palmer-Wasilla Highway.

Pete drove me there, which was a really good thing because it was hard to locate if you did not know where it was, and I did not know the exact location.

I set up my table smack dab in the middle of the festivities. To my far right was Life Med, whose specialization is wilderness rescue, and to my not so far right was the Wasilla Fire Department. On my left and around the corner was Kid’s Kupboard.

I soon realized that I could not compete with all this. Life Med had a bright orange helicopter that landed further to my right, off the parking lot area. And the fire department brought a fire truck with a ladder and a bucket that went way, way up in the sky. And Kid’s Kupboard provided hotdogs and live music.

Oh yeah, and there was face painting going on. And a target of some sorts, which children tossed balls at it.

And there were lots of do-gooder motorcyclists, from what I could see, two groups, one was Christian based and the other was just do gooder.

No, I could not compete with all this. However, my being in between the hoo ha on my right and the hoo ha on my left, meant that parents and children had to pass in front of me to get from one hoo ha area to the other.

I made eye contact with the parents and drew them in the way a fisherman would draw in a hooked fish. Some of the parents and their children seemed brain dead and uninterested in acquiring books or more information about the Bright Lights Book Project. However, there were others who were appreciative and inquisitive.

One set of parents made it a point to tell me how much they appreciated the project and how glad they were to be getting books. And quite a few more immediately mentioned all the bookcases.

So being a part of this event was well worth my time. It was, of course, tiring, standing on pavement for five hours and hawking books.

I also had a Summer in the Park(s) flier and began promoting our summer venture. All the parents I told about this were excited about the program, and I think will be attending. Which reminds me, I am going to have to let elementary school teachers know about this, this week because schools will be closing for the summer fairly soon.

I talked some to Melina Sevigny, who used to be the BLBP board president and now works for Life Med. I forgot to ask her if she ever rode in the helicopter.

I distributed books in the late afternoon and then came home. I brushed Tyra and Hrimmi late this evening. They are both blowing their coats big time. It took a long time to do the two, so tomorrow I will groom Raudi.
