March 6, 2025: Looking for the Good

These are tough times. It appears as though we are experiencing societal collapse. For many years we were lulled into a sense of complacency. No one imagined that what’s happening now would happen. I think that in the months ahead, we are going to have to learn to better appreciate the seemingly insignificant things.

Last spring the Bear Mountain Bald Eagle cam indicated that the eggs of the two eagles who were nesting high atop a tree were infertile. The birds, after spending months sitting on the eggs, finally abandoned their nest.

This morning, Pete told me that Jackie and Shadow had laid three eggs and that two had hatched. I was peeved that he waited so long to tell me this. 95,000 others were, however, on it. This evening, the third egg was hatching. It looks pretty stormy in the nest area. But eagles have feathers and down and will keep the hatchlings warm.

So every so often, when I start to get down about the sorry state of the world, and as well the sometimes precarious state of the BLBB, I think about these birds, and what fun it’s going to be, watching the parents tend to the young.

This morning, I looked out the window and was surprised to see that there was six inches of snow on the ground. And it was still snowing when I went outside to tend to the horses. We were all lulled into a state of complacency – we all thought it was spring. “har har” said Mother Nature.

What amazes me is that I didn’t obsess about whether or not I should head to town. I just did it. The roads were slushy, but not icy. I figured I’d drive slow and do just fine, and this is what I did.

I was supposed to have lunch with my new friend Deb, but instead, she and her husband Jim decided to return to the Kenai, leaving early, so as to at least partially beat the storm. Our paths crossed at 10 a.m., which was fortuitous because this did leave the rest of my day free – to get work done.

I next did distributing – getting books into the Palmer Pool is now a priority. The bookcase is in the lobby, visible from the door. And there are benches in this lobby, so those who are waiting can read if they wish. I am really pleased about this. We have put bookcases in so-so places. These books have then become what we call slow movers. The books at the Palmer pool will be fast movers.

I did my route and returned to the hotel. I dealt with books. I dealt with people. There are times when it’s easiest to work with no people around. I’m fast, I’m efficient, and I get the work done fast.

Cathy, the artist in residence, showed up in the afternoon. We talked about the sorry state of the word some, then went over to the Thrift Store. This time, I didn’t purchase any children’s books. Maybe, finally, I am coming to my senses.
