December 24, 2025: Christmas Eve

All day is considered to be Christmas eve. As I have said in years past, this makes no sense to me. Eve is short for evening. The day before Christmas is just that – the day. Now that it is the evening, it is the eve.

This year I was more in the thick of the Christmas goings-on. But the most amazing thing of all is that I did not get sucked into it. I did not spend hours and hours shopping or listening to the same old Christmas carols. No, all I did was put up a tree and assist in decorating it.

Now if I could do anything, I would have a real live nativity scene, with all the animals gathered around – horses, chickens, goats, a borrowed donkey. I’d get a fake baby Jesus because I would not want to subject a child to the cold. It would have enough ahead of it in life – this would be the wrong way to begin.

If this was at the hotel, I’d have Cherokee be the Virgin Mary. She spends her days walking around the perimeter of the hotel, chain smoking cigarettes. I’ll bet the Virgin Mary smoked because she had a lot on her mind. Most likely Joseph smoked too – they probably laid awake, in bed, blowing smoke rings, completely unaware as to the future, meaning they’d both become famous.

If I were to put together a nativity scene, I would need an assist. This is not the sort of thing you want to tackle alone.

Today – Christmas eve to some – I worked cleaning up the former banquet room of the historic Eagle Hotel. There were no volunteers. And Cathy, who is the artist in residence, bowed out. I did talk some with Lawrence, the volunteer coordinator – I had this sense today, that the younger generations are different than the older generations. They are computer savvy to the point of their being oblivious of the consequences of the growth of technology.

Lawrence knows how to program AI – but is not aware of the consequences of the use of this new form of technology. None of us can imagine it, although those who are on the cutting edge in terms of this technology can imagine more than most.

He mentioned having used A.I. to put his resume together. Said he didn’t have the time to write one up himself. I personalized the issue, telling him that this is one of Pete’s areas of expertise and quite possibly, he could work on resumes for individuals once he retired. I then added that if he went with the option of using AI instead of paying someone, and everyone else did the same, that the resume writers wouldn’t be able to pay their bills either.

My biggest concern about AI is that people are going to fail to see it for what it really is – a quick fix. I should remind myself that I ought not take on the big dogs when engaging in these kinds of discussions.
