December 11, 2025: Winding Down

The word wind is in the word winding. Must be related to movement. I once took a course in meteorology and I failed. I wanted know two things – first, the names of the clouds, and secondly, where the wind came from. The clouds, we went over this the second half of the 1st class, after the teacher went over the syllabus. I had hoped we’d spend most of the semester on this.

I also wanted to know where the wind came from. This turned out to be very complicated, and the teacher spent three quarters of the semesters on this. It had something to do with adiabatics and aerobatics.

I didn’t drop the course because I knew that if I did, that I’d have to spend another semester at UNH – and I could not afford this. So I finished it, failing the course.

I hung out with another student, named Jill. She was also failing. She told me the next semester that her having taken the course did not appear on her transcripts.

I learned the name of the clouds on my own. And I figured finally that the wind was created by the cold air rising and the warm air rushing in. Or maybe it was the other way around.

Pete took the same course when we were living in Milwaukee. He got an A. I think that this course is indicative of being able to think in a certain way. I admire those who can do this because their world view includes weather patterns. Now if we had more people who could think this way, we would not have climate change issues because everyone would be forewarned about what was to come.

The wind here has died down but in Oregon and Washington, on the coast, those that live there are having to deal with what they are calling atmospheric rivers, a term that I don’t fully understand.

Least you think that I am stupid, I do believe in climate change and that it’s the most pressing world problem. I fear that one of two things is going to happen: It’s going to get much hottter. Or the light from the sun is going to be blocked off and we will be left in the dark. Neither prospect sounds very pleasant.

Some are dealing by constructing air conditioned domes and the like. They are not addressing the problem, just finding a way of making themselves comfortable.

Why is it that human beings are so incredibly stupid? I don’t get it.

Dogs sometimes are not that intelligent, either. Yesterday, Shadow got into the Vitamin D that was left out on the table. Dr. Kaiser said that the dose she got would not be lethal. Actually, I was the one who was stupid – I mixed up my fat and water soluble vitamins. ADEK are fat soluble. She did just fine today – she spent the day with me and was well behaved.

There is no vaccine, but there should be one, for stupidity.
