November 13, 2025: Does Anybody Know what Time it Is?

LEGOs. The Bright Lights Book Project got a grant from the Palmer Lions Club for bean bag chairs and LEGOs, small plastic building blocks. The wheels started turning when I learned we got the nod for the LEGOs. I began thinking about LEGO Literacy and what we might do.

Using the blocks to teach fractions came to mind. I looked online and saw, of course, that others had been using them as a teaching tool for many years. There were too many online literacy options, so I didn’t get very far into this. Too many choices. Like picking out shampoo – I get Pete to do this.

Today I went to Sutton, the next town over, and I talked very briefly with McKenzie, one of the librarians, and when I asked about their LEGOs club and their activities, she told me she had children do things like have competitions in which they built towers. Then, she paused and added, “What they (the children in the LEGOs club) most like to do is build.” She added that they then liked to have their building projects put on display for the next month. The club meets once a month.

And on the drive back to Palmer I thought -- maybe I might just have the kids build, if this then is what they want to do. I dunno. The first thing I need to do is get the LEGOs and advertise that there is a club.

My common refrain these days is, “There’s just one of me,” and well, maybe this is a copout. I have attempted to organize people to do various things, and in this respect my efforts have fallen short. Maybe the problem is my mantra, “there’s just one of me” is just a flimsy excuse for not having enough follow through.

Had a pretty good day, going to Sutton, stocking the post office kiosk, going to the elementary school and seeing if they need books, and getting books.

Then went to Rotary. I like the group.

Then I went back to the former banquet room of the historic Eagle Hotel and worked with volunteers. Then Cathy, the artist in residence; and Pam, a volunteer; and I worked on the Christmas bookmark ornaments.

And tonight, I went to the Women who Care philanthropic meeting – three woman are chosen to speak, and the one who after gets the most votes gets $100.00 from each woman present.

Wow. I was up against the Dolly Parton books to children program and My House, an organization that assists homeless youth. The woman who spoke for My House was not a member of the organization but decided at the last minute to enter the speaker raffle.

I did the best I could – sour grapes, the food was put on the table as I was speaking. Jeanie, who accompanied me to this event, told me this after.

After, I networked relentlessly, and I do mean relentlessly, and gave out many, many bookmarks. So I did my job. And this concluded a very long day.
