May 28, 2025: Sun up to Sun Down

I seem to be making the most of it. I don’t wake up at sunrise, which is at 4:00 a.m., but around 6:00 a.m., which is pretty close. Sun set is now at 11:00 p.m. I am getting to bed around 12:00 p.m.

In the meantime, I am observing spring become summer. Pete says that it’s already summer, but no, not yet. The air is no longer fragrant with the smell of cottonwoods, but it’s still fresh. And the light green haze is now a darker green growth.

I worked on Shelf Life today – it didn’t go as well as I liked, maybe because I wasn’t as far along with the sections on my observations about U-Haul and the Mat-Su School District warehouse. But, as I tell myself, any time I focus on this manuscript, I am making progress. And I do feel a sense of writerly completion when I am done for the day.

I am glad I wrote early – writing later would not have worked because now would be the time and I am tired.

It was a busy day – I told Pete that I fear that if I get too busy that I won’t do as good a job. This is a very real fear. Today I was at my max in terms of what I can do.

I did the second half of my distribution route, first going across the street to the new mercantile store and asking if we could put in a bookcase. The answer was no. The place is just too upscale for the likes of us.

On to Bionic Chiropractic, where I dropped off books and talked for a bit with Susan, whose sons are going to read to seniors next week. Then on to Benders of Hair where I attempted to get a hold of Betty, my old hairdresser. They are not giving out her phone number or address.

Onward, to Lekker Bakery, which is owned by our friend Alex Papasavas. I stepped in the place and did a double take, for there is a black and white mural on the wall of an individual on a horse. Also, sandhill cranes. Seeing this, I developed an affinity for the place. Yes, we are going to have a bookcase here.

Next stop, Swanson Elementary School where I straightened out the little library. I made a mistake of looking at my email -- A teacher at Sherrod Elementary said they had books for us. I went and got them.

On the way out, the school librarian caught me and he said that he had 18 boxes of books – he’s not sure, but he said that they might have to first go to The Mat-Su School District Warehouse – we can pick them up there.

On my list, next The Little Dipper Icecream shop. I wasn’t able to talk to the owner about our putting a bookcase in their lobby. Pete got the number, so I will do this tomorrow.

Then to the bat cave, err, the former banquet room of the historic Eagle Hotel. It was a very busy afternoon – I’d recruited two volunteers who showed up, I put them to work categorizing books. Cheryl appeared with books, Bill appeared with books. Susan appeared with books.

And now I have a lot of emails to answer. I can keep up the pace just so long as it does not get any faster.
