Yesterday morning, when I let Sastrugi and Lilac out of their pen, I noticed that Sassy was wagging her tail like a dog waiting to get a choice piece of meat. I then knew that she was in season and that it was time to visit Mr. Buck.
Pete and I spent the day attempting to get a hold of her breeder, who was very busy. I give Pete a lot of credit. He did not say no when I said that we needed to get Sassy out to Cottonwood Creek. I was relieved when by 9:00 p.m. we did not hear back from her breeder because I was tired. I would have said, well, we’ll try again in the spring. Pete though, was prepared to load up Sassy and head over there.
The breeder said last night that if Sastrugi was still in season, to bring her by today, at noon. This morning Sassy was even more in season than yesterday. I scratched the upper part of her tail, and she wiggled it vigorously. I did not take a close look at her vaginal area – I should have – the tail wagging was a clear indication to me that it was time for a road trip.
Pete figured out how to load her up. We propped at 2 x 8 against the Tundra tailgate and with one of us on each side, lead Sassi up into the truck bed. As we did this, I thought, the little agility training she’s had, did her in good stead.
We headed for town. I had a lot to do at the hotel (grr, grr, grr), and so Pete took Sassi to meet her man. I got the full report when Pete and Sassi returned. She was bred three times to a goat named, ahem, Ruger, a very stinky buck.
Pete said that Sassi was very concerned the first time she was bred, but okay with what was going on the second and third times.
I had the BLBP volunteers come and meet Sassi. I noted that the rear of the truck bed smelled like Buck.
The pair then headed for home, and I finished taking care of books. All the while, I thought about the future of Sassi’s offspring. If she has a buck, we’ll find it a home, and long before he begins to stink. We’ll sell him intact – I hope that he gets to be a pack goat. If she has two or three bucks, we’ll do the same. I’d like to have breeding rights for Lilac. The only name I can think of is Guns ‘n Roses.
If she has a doe, we’ll hang onto her. If she has two does, we’ll part with one of them.
Names are important, which is why I’m glad we have time to think about this.
