October 10, 2024: What day is it?

Today a handful of people asked me what day it is. For some odd reason, I did not draw a blank. It could have been the 9th or the 11th – for once I got lucky because I picked the middle ground.

Woke up feeling iffy – didn’t know how it was going to go with my hip and back. As the day progressed, it got better. This is such a strange deal – it comes and it goes. When it goes, I wonder if it is going to get better. I don’t like living with incertitude. Is that a word? I also woke up early because Pete had his physical therapy appointment.

Alys and Raudi

It just popped in my head; I said to him, “Wow. We’re now inner circle.” Now I didn’t mind being on the fringes of the Palmer elite’s discussions, no I did not mind at all. But now we are in the thick of it. For instance, the new Palmer city manager was forced to resign by the Palmer City Council last night. This means that important matters, like discussions about Palmer Public Library funding –are going to be put on hold. And one way or another, the BLBP will be affected.

This morning it snowed – just a dusting. The term termination dust usually refers to early snow on the foothills and mountains. I’d say what fell this morning was just this. We are at 1,000 feet above sea level, so it was easy to picture our place as being up higher.

The snow disappeared as quickly as it came – it was what I called the post frost haze. Pam, who is the office manager of the BLBP, said that last time it snowed on this date was in 2020. I thought for a minute and could not remember anything significant about this particular year. I didn’t let this bother me, instead I refocused my attention on getting boxes ready for villages.

I box the books differently every time. This time I lined up four boxes and I labeled them Pre-K, Lower Elementary, Upper Elementary, and Middle and High School. Then I put the books that were lying around in the various boxes. I did not pull boxes from shelves and do them individually.

All to say, that by 3:30 I was done and ready to talk to Summer at Old Harbor School in on Kodiak Island. I had met her at the Science of Reading Symposium last May, and it was then that she said that they needed books there and would like to have a book fair.

So we will send books to Old Harbor in the next few days, and I will follow the books there in the next few days. Gulp. We are talking 50 boxes of books. And my costs will be paid for with grant funding.

I didn’t ride yesterday, and I felt bad about feeling bad. Today I did ride. I got Raudi out at 6:30 p.m. It was getting dark. I realized that if I am to ride in the afternoon/early evenings, that I must get home sooner rather than later.
