September 29, 2024: One More Day of September

Here we go. One more day of one of the best months of the year. I remember the beginning of the month. The leaves on the trees were green, with yellow/orange leaves here and there. September is generally a dramatic month in terms of the change of the seasons and this month was no exception.

Another really nice day. And no, I didn’t get out and ride. We had friends coming over, so in the morning I cleaned the house. Then in the afternoon, me, Pete, Ron, and Hillary unloaded hay from the trailer. Pete had gone earlier and gotten a load. Happily, we four got the hay into the shed.

Pete had just finished putting in a new floor in the large shed. This is going to keep the hay from going bad. Putting it on a pallet didn’t work well enough.

It’s a race against time since Pete is needing to have carpal tunnel surgery. It’s tricky. He needs to have this done. No time is going to be good. But we are thinking that sooner is going to be better than later, so we are working at getting the wood in the shed and the hay in the barn.

Pete also went and cut down a birch tree that was close to the upper cabin. He then cut the downed tree into rounds. This wood is green so we won’t be able to use it until next winter.

He may also have cut down a spruce tree; I wasn’t paying attention.

After we’d put one hundred bales in the barn, we three went back to John DePriest’s place and picked up 40 more. Pete and I figured that we were set. We stopped at the Trunk Road Country Store and got ice cream and checked out the bookcases, which did not need any new books.

We three worked hard and in a sustained fashion for some time. Had we had more time, we would have had Hillary and Ron give Pete an assist with rolling the birch rounds down the hill.

The horses paid close attention to what was going on, and after the hay was in the shed I let them out of the enclosure. They all came over and went for the hay dregs and hay in the shed. I think they know when we are bringing more hay in, and as do I, feel great relief in knowing that we have enough hay to hold them over until next spring.

We had Ron and Hillary over for dinner. Pete made pizza.

I was glad that my hip didn’t give out under what were very strenuous conditions. It is a bit achy ,and my lower back is a tad bit sore, but I am thinking that perhaps I am on the road to recovery. You never know.
