August 10, 2024: That small window of sunshine

This morning, I woke up to sunshine. It hurt my eyes. I got up and tended to the horses, then ate breakfast. My plan was to get out while the weather was good. I wasn’t fast enough. By the time I got Hrimmi saddled up, it was drizzling out.

I have accepted the fact that it is now the monsoon season and that I will just have to dress for riding in the rain. So much so that I later got Raudi out for a woods ride. Have raingear, will travel.

Guest Cabin

Our guests took off for a few days. Pete had this astute comment that people come here with certain expectations and find that these expectations don’t hold up. We’ve seen this happen before. I need to do a better job leveling with people.

Yes, we have an outhouse. But we also use the in house.

Yes, we have a shower. It takes some finessing, getting the right water temperature, but it can be done.

Yes, we have things to tend to around here, and of course we sure appreciate help.

No, the upper cabin does not have running water, and a funky mattress on the bed. You have to hike up to it. But Pete did use the scythe to make a trail. It goes past the dog grave site. Bootleg and Rainbow and Jenna are buried there. Tinni is buried adjacent to the horse pen. I did not explain this to our visitors. I don’t know if they’d be interested.

Yes, we have to get out of our vehicles to open the gate, then walk down the driveway to close it.

Yes, we have to turn the generator on when we want to take showers or do the dishes.

No, we don’t want to be linked up to a conventional power source. We know that the road being paved would follow. There would be a lot more noise and light if this occurred.

Well, good stories at breakfast this morning – Laura was livelier than she was last night. Also, she may have been anticipating going off on an adventure with Pat. They will be back on Monday evening.

After my ride on Hrimmi, I headed to town and got the books ready to put in the Alaska State Fair newspaper boxes. Pete and Robert dropped off most of the boxes and books. Me, I worked on boxing up books to send to villages. I am pleased with my having found a good out of the way space to work, and as well, a system for packing the boxes.

It would be good, say, if I found a slew of volunteers to assist me in doing the next go-round of boxing up books because we can then further advertise the books to the villages program. Right now, it’s just me, me, and me.

Tomorrow, I stay home. And tomorrow, I will focus exclusively on riding my horses and cleaning their tack. I’ll also clean the goat pen. None of this is weather dependent.
