May 22, 2024: Sicker than a Dog

Where did this expression come from? I don’t see many sick dogs around – maybe veterinarians who tend to innumerable parvo puppies can relate. Or it might just be a phrase that means really sick.

It started out with my inner thigh muscles ceasing up, then I began feeling pain in my lower back. I yelled a few times – the pain was so intense. The best was yet to come, that is food poisoning. Last night I had Mexican food – and after I went to bed I began feeling sharp stabbing pain in my gut. It was really intense. I finally felt it coming, the meal and the other things I ate yesterday. It came up really fast – I could not make it to the bathroom. This happened three times.

There was a huge mess to clean up – in the bedroom, down the stairs, and in the bathroom. There was additional spatter on the kitchen window and on the walls in the bathroom. These details should suffice. It did not occur to me to take photos.

Then this morning I began having projectile diarrhea. I ended up soiling several pairs of long underwear and underwear.

I began feeling better, but not for long. The neck pain and head pain has returned. I say that enough is enough. Tomorrow I will make an appointment with Dr. Joe, the chiropractor. I hope (there’s that word, hope, applicable of course to medical conditions) that this is merely a disc out of place and that all I will need is a simple adjustment.

I laid down most of the day. Laying down makes the neck hurt. Ibuprofen is not helping the situation. I got up and cleaned the horse pen, then laid down again.

Tonight, after dinner, Pete and I went to the hotel. Pam was there, she trained some book cleaners. I did not feel like talking to anyone, so I puttered around, putting errant books into their proper places. Pete categorized the nonfiction books.

It was a bit of a mess when we got there, but things looked a whole lot better when we were done.

Kudos to Pete, who ended up cleaning up after me, and also took care of the animals. I, being sick, was very much aware of how healthy he is – he just did one chore after another. And in the morning, he did a Zoom phone call with two AmeriCorps workers, so it is appearing as though we will have a staff person for a year, starting in the fall.

We again are talking about purchasing the hotel. It makes the most sense –We agree that our constructing a building would be a not-so-good idea because we are going to continue to grow. We are waiting on getting a consultant, one who will tell the higher ups at the Mat-Su foundation know what he/she thinks is our best option.

We stopped at the Trunk Road laundromat on the way home, and I stocked the bookcase. Both Pete and I also had ice cream. I am now heading to bed, even though it’s light out.
