March 26, 2023: Books Coming and Going, going, Gone

Beautiful weather early on, sunny, temperatures in the 20s. A radical change from yesterday when there was quite a bit of varied precipitation. It snowed, rained, hailed, sleeted, and then some. Now in December, the weather isn’t as variable as it is in LATE March. I’m still trying to wrap my head around that one. It feels as though someone removed a week or two from the month.

I arrived at the recycling center this morning and discovered that it was a fine haul, perhaps the best ever. We now only get the books

marked for us – the rest are salvaged now on Fridays. They toss their hardback discards in the Gaylords, and we dig for them.

Anyhow, there were a LOT of kids’ books that had been dropped off for us, a Gaylord full of dumped boxes of books (go figure), and half a pallet of adult books.

I had assistance today – of course Bill and Pete salvaged. In addition, the BLBP Board President Robert Wallace gave us a hand, as did Pete and my old friend, Gene. It was interesting working with guys – they, of course, did not listen to me, but they did share interesting book finds. And one of them tossed a hard covered book into the Gaylord I was cleaning out – and I narrowly missed getting nailed in the head.

We finished just in time for lunch. I brought my own lunch with me. I’m trying to eat better, in part by cutting back on carbs and sugar. I did really well today. The guys – they talked quite a bit about guns and bear hunting. Every bear encounter mentioned seem to have a point in the story in which the protagonist shit their pants.

We packed up our truck shortly after lunch – had a pallet of books on hand – then I left, so as to stay one step ahead of the other workers. They arrived as I was packing up books to take to Anchorage, and they unloaded the contents of Pete’s truck into the library room in the Meeting House. They also put a few boxes of nonfiction downstairs in the bookcave.

As the threesome were working, I was putting kids’ books in bins. Robert and Pete assisted me in loading them into Robert’s car, then Robert and I were off to Anchorage, so as to catch a few games and to pass out some books.

My friend Bruce, who recruits referees, had set up his table beside ours. This was on the right. The three tables on our left were empty, so Robert and I laid out the contents of eight bins of books on them. Readers came and got the books – business was slow and steady. We assisted readers in getting books in between watching two high school games – they were the girls and boys championship games.

Robert explained to me what was going on.

Then we packed up and went back to the Meeting House. I drove home in the dark. Scary. But at least the roads were clear.
