March 7, 2023: And after a long day at the office

I did have a long day at the office, which in my case is town. I think that the town of Palmer, Alaska is in a weird astrological zone right now – I had a great day once I got home. I often sometimes yearn for the good old days when I didn’t have to go anywhere. Now that we are having a run of good weather, my having to go to town often is even harder. There, the roads are slushy. Here, the roads are hard packed.

It’s sometimes like being in a differing world here. I wonder how long it will remain this way. It is dependent of course upon when power comes in. Power’s coming in is going to be inevitable – there are places far more remote in which the denizens have electricity.

Pete and Hrimmi

Mike’s place, down the road from us was taken over by his relatives. I say taken over because I’m not sure if he sold it to them or they just decided he was too addled and took it on themselves. This past fall they had his trash (this included two People Movers) moved out of there and they put in a driveway. And the area where I attempted to put in a horse pasture has now been surveyed. The pink flagging waves in the wind.

So, electricity comes in. Someone will pay a huge hookup fee, then others will pay a lesser fee. I remember in Nicaragua, there were main lines – people hooked, illegally, into these lines, and had power. The odd thing was that those who previously had power and hooked in illegally were fined, and those who didn’t have power in the past and hooked in were not fined. This may have been because the powers that be (pun intended) had access to past records and could tell if someone suddenly had no electric bill. Pretty smart, those Nicaraguans.

So, on the home front. I hurried with distributing and got home, pulled in the driveway, and saw that the horse trailer door had been shoveled out. Pete was standing nearby. We had talked about going for a ride today, and Pete, wonderful Pete, was getting ready to get the horses ready.

Pete rode Raudi and I rode Hrimmi. We went down Murphy Road, around the corner, to the Ridge Runner turnoff and back. A few snowmobilers passed. The horses were unphased by the machinery. In fact, the horses were very well behaved the entire time.

Pete now has gotten me back into the riding routine. If weather permits and I get home early tomorrow, I will go for a ride. He won’t be able to accompany me because he will be teaching late.

Tyra was at the gate when I got back, so I took her for a walk around the loop. I wish those who have idiot dogs would move, so that I might take the goats out.

The weather has been so nice that I want to be out. It’s just a chore, being out when the weather is bad.
