September 27, 2023: Good Omens

September is my favorite month, and 27 is my lucky number. This double whammy only comes once a year. I should think of this when, even on this, the most fortuitous month of the year, I fret.

I was fretting this morning. I again had a lot to do. I had to go to the Mat-Su Borough Building and pass out books to kids. I also had to distribute books on Bill’s route because Bill was going out of town.

Getting out of here in the mornings is always, absolutely always, fraught with peril. This never goes as planned and takes some time. Pete’s out of town, so I had to take care of all the animals, feed me, and get ready to go.

I had planned to take the dogs for a run, but Bill appeared at the door. He was picking up the last of the season’s manure. He seldom comes to the door. He was going away on vacation, and so talking to me was a way of tying up loose ends. A fun visit, but it took up valuable time.

The dogs did not get walked. I did not get breakfast. With what little time I had, I both attempted to fix my hearing aids and searched for my once again missing cell phone. P-tooey. I never build in time for this.

I got out a half hour later than planned. I got to the hotel and vied with the Dave’s Meat Market truck for a parking spot. I packed up the car yesterday, and so I was ready to go. Pam was waiting for me, yes, I was late. She said that one of the winners of the silent auction had come by moments before and picked up their garden books.

We went to the borough building and discovered we were early. We went and had tea at the ale house.

I didn’t know anything about the upcoming event except that it was being sponsored by the Ideas Homeschool. Well, it turned out it was open gym time, first for the younger children and then for the older children.

We set up behind the basketball hoops. I had decided to chance not bringing a table (this was recommended) and fortunately, a table had already been set up.

Essentially, we passed on books to mothers and children in the morning. I also let them know about the Seuss on Saturday event taking place on October 7th. We forgot to put the place, the Eagle Hotel, on the flier.

The kids, they had so much energy that it was palpable. I so badly wanted to play with them. There were a lot of balls and Frisbees being tossed around, and a lot of noise was being made. Instead, I made plans for the future. Next time, two weeks from now, I am going to have a story hour – after the kids exercise, I’ll then read them a book. This is perfect; because as studies show, reading retention is greatest after exercise.

The afternoon didn’t go as well. The older kids got in a circle and played Frisbee. They were obviously very focused. They didn’t take any books.

After all this, I distributed. Uhh, it felt good to be caught up. Tomorrow, though, lots more books coming in.
