July 14, 2023: Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

It’s dubious, categorizing one’s mental state. But I’m going to go ahead and do it anyways. I must have obsessive compulsive disorder. There is now strong evidence to support this. I don’t know anyone who near single handedly would do as I’ve done, and in a month’s time (assisted in moving) sorted, cleaned, and categorized hundreds of books. Most, I noticed, will do any of these mentioned tasks for a short period of time, then move on. These people are normal. They lack what those of us who have OCD have, which is single minded intensity of focus.

This is considered a disorder. This is really ironic, considering that I’m obsessed with getting things in order.

Some have ADHD which is the abbreviation for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Me, I have ADHA, which is the abbreviation for American Dairy Herd Association. It is also the abbreviation for American Dairy Herd Aspiration. Here is my spiel—I’m Alys and I have a problem. I love livestock and caring for them. Yes, I aspire to own a herd of dairy herd animals – cows, this would be too much for me – they have these huge udders and, count ‘em, four teats. Rather, I am fixated on goats, who are the greatest of all time. If I had the set-up for it, I’d gladly have a milking herd.

So there you have me. The book project has brought out my obsessive underside and having livestock as brought my obsessive overside.

I learned in school that example helps one to frame their assertions.

Today’s a good example of the above. I left early, on a beautiful day, for town. I arrived at the Historic Eagle Hotel and got to work. I opened the blinds (I finally figured this out) and the one window that opens. I propped open the door with a box of World Book Encyclopedias. Then I began working on the kids’ bookshelves, moving books around, so that the cleaned books (kids’, young adult) are visible. This involved re-boxing books, which was a huge sorting related endeavor.

I next sorted and categorized the books that came in last week. And I made space for incoming books. I also moved a second table into this area. I thought, as I was doing this, that I learned when at the Meeting House to use space wisely.

I also unpacked some of the books that we got yesterday, from Tidal Wave books.

The space looked more tidy when I left than when I arrived. All total, I spent six hours doing this.

I was reluctant to leave but had to go because I had to give Pete an assist cleaning out the hay barn.

This was also right up my alley. I picked up hay, some with my bare hands, and after putting it in the cart, dumped it in what I call the secret place. I also moved the pallets outside. Pete gave me a hand when he returned from getting hay.

So today, AOCD and ADHA activities coincided. I made order out of disorder in both instances.
