June 24, 2012: A non-gardener’s Diary

A non-gardener’s Diary

I pat the soil
as if it were the flank of an old but wise goat
put out to pasture before her time,
and think, this soil
surrounds a cabbage start
of indeterminate origin, planted
perhaps a bit too close to the broccoli,
gnawed down to a nub, by the goat
past her prime but still able to discern
what’s a weed and what’s not a weed.

I don’t begrudge Peaches her foray into the garden
for yesterday one of us left the gate open
a gate that’s two pieces of plywood
lined up against a wooden fence
in order to keep her kind
from eating the food of our kind.
