Trip Dispatch #50: Thursday, July 7: Mt. Massive Trailhead to Turquoise Lake: On to Basecamp

We left Mt. Massive at 10:30 and embarked upon what for the horses was yet another long, hard climb. Ate lunch by a small Lake, where we were serenaded by frogs. As we were leaving, we met up with two hikers who’d previously been with the Colorado School of Mines group. Both remarked that Rainbow now looked much better. On the way down Raudi ran down-trail and slid out onto a granite boulder. There was, at the boulder’s base, a three-foot drop-off. I spun her butt around, and turned her head in Pete’s direction. I didn’t have time to think about our going over the edge. Rather, I then assisted Pete in getting all three horses across a fast-moving, rock-strewn creek. Siggi and Signy went willingly. However, we (again) had to tie dear Raudi to Signy, and pull her into the water. This time, a simple tug sufficed.
