Departure

Off you go, to cruise at an altitude
Of 30,000 feet, me left standing
with two feet firmly on the ground,
as if gum was stuck to both shoe soles.

Where do we go from here?
We ask one another this question, knowing
that this is a question that cannot be answered,
for here is where we are
and where will remain,
terminally indifferent to other couples
who are now asking one another
this very same question.
