April 22, 2024: Bogged Down

I understand that attitude is everything. I also understand that the same holds true about maintaining a positive attitude. Most of the day, I did have a positive attitude. This was because the weather was nice.

I said to someone today that here, 360 days of the year the weather is crappy. And five days of the year it’s good. The sun was shining today, and temperatures were in the 50s. So I remained upbeat even though now, looking back, it was a truly shitty day.

I forgot what I was going to write about. I have noticed that my acuity is not that great, what with a neck ache, tooth aches, and now severe dental pain.

I had the implant cap put in today. I had asked that this be done and was told yes, it could be combined with my appointment. Didn’t happen. Led me to realize that a dental office is only as good as its office staff. The office staff at Meridian Dental is different every time I walk in the door.

They were not at all helpful when after the post was put in, I said I was in pain. One amongst them came up with Tylenol, which she set on the counter. After, I realized that this was very unhygienic. The Tylenol wasn’t strong enough. I did my distributing then went back to the hotel. Could not think. Wandered around in a daze. Then I went to Tae Kwon Doe. Not good, not good at all. I did not run out the door, but I could have. I was too lazy. But I could not recall what I’d memorized and therefore was dreadfully embarrassed.

Then on the home front – Pete and I went for a ride, me on Raudi and Pete on Tyra. The mares were glad to get out – we rode to the corner – but their feet are tender. Fortunately, the feet are also very, very clean and are showing no signs of thrush.

It’s breakup. The horses are now shedding big time, and the snow in the pen is melting down fast. Older poop is materializing.

We are going to do a June horse trek, in the Yukon. We have a month and a week to get ready. Gear must be sorted out and cleaned, and we have to get the horses in better shape. Otherwise, this venture will not be fair to them. Imagine it – if you were required, with no prior exercise, to do a rigorous trip.

Humans can complain. Horses cannot. Actually, their complaints can take the form of a bite, a kick, or a hard, fast buck if mounted. But non-horse people don’t see these sort of behaviors as a complaint; rather, this is just a good excuse to give the said horse a wallop.

And what would a horse do to me if I kicked or bit one of them?

As I finish up writing these dispatches, I always ask myself, is this a day that I’m going to want to remember? This one, I think so, but I don’t know why.
