October 22, 2021: Rise and Shine, Shine and Rise

The sun is now coming up well after 8 a.m. I tend to wake up around 6 a.m., lay in bed and wait for it to get light because then it’s easier to do the morning chores. With light, I can then see and keep an eye on the animals, this includes Swampy, who is jet black, and Tinni who is the same color. They both blend into the landscape. Shadow too, but in the mornings, she prefers to get up and going when Pete gets up and going, which is anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour later than me. Pete never, ever gets up before me.

Some days, and today was one of them, I feel like the Bright Lights Book Project is a salaried job without the salary. I had to be at the Meeting House at 11:30 a.m. for one meeting and 12:00 a.m. for another.

I first went and checked the distribution bookcases, so that I’d have an idea of what and how much to add later. Then I went to the Meeting House and boxed National Geographics (going to the magazine trough at Bishop’s Attic Thrift Store); teaching resource books (destined for the Mat-Su School District Home School office); and fiction (destined for the Mat-Su Borough K-12 home school program).

My 11:30 a.m. meeting was brief; I passed on knitting and craft and children’s books to Kenda who I met at the Democrat booth at the Alaska State Fair. I next met with Milena, and this was a very long meeting/discussion/get together. I presumed that she would make a quick stop, let me know what she learned about possible sites for a building, and then move on. No, she stuck around.

Milena got to know some of the knit pickers, the women who get together on Fridays and knit and chat. This includes Sarah, who is the Meeting House/Church of the Covenant Pastor.

Milena and I talked about the future of the book project, and about grant funding. What she said further makes sense – focus on Alaska for profit companies that fund non-profits. She’s going to send me a spread sheet, and I am going to begin entering grant information.

Milena assisted me in picking out books for Danni at the borough, and after we all dispersed, I drove over there with three boxes of fiction. Danni took three books – she’s a compulsive reader. The rest I left with the receptionist who is going to put them on the shelves. She already had a bookcase in her office with free books. I think the entire staff agreed the more books around, the better.

Tomorrow is a salvage day. I’m hoping for just a few boxes of books. I have enough on hand to get through this week.
