October 16, 2021: What the Future Holds

You got up early today; the alarm was not set correctly, so you got up at 7 a.m. rather than 8 a.m. You got up, discovered the time difference, then deliberated about staying up versus going back to bed. You finally decided to stay up, well knowing that you would not be able to get back to sleep.

You put on your clothes and outdoor gear, then ventured outside. It was still dark out, making it seem even earlier than it actually was. You staggered down to the horse pen and fed and cleaned up after them. By the time you were done, the first light had already appeared.

The kitchen light remained off, meaning that Pete was not yet up. So you decided to take Tinni and Shadow on an outing around the loop and up and down the trail. The hood was really quiet, that is until you got half-way home. The neighbor’s dogs appeared and resumed barking. Now this time, instead of carrying a rock, you carried a stick. Your rationale was that you are a better shot with a stick than with a rock.

You didn’t have to use your stick. Shadow remained on top of Tinni, and Tinni moved at a slow pace, both ignoring the mangy curs. And you again thought about how lucky you are, to have such amazingly non-reactive animals.

You returned home, ate, milked Swampy, and headed to the recycling center, where you sorted books with your very good friends, Nan and Bill. There were more books than usual; in fact, the entire front area was filled with large and small boxes.

Nan and Bill were in really good spirits, which was good considering that there were so many books on hand. There was a lot of book talk, mainly sharing odd books with one another. Finally, Nan had to leave. Pete soon came and took her place. Pete was no less lively than Nan.

After loading up the Tundra, you and Pete headed to Claudia Sihler’s for the weekly agility lesson. Once again, Shadow was a super star. All the dogs in the class did well, but Shadow, who is the youngest, did the best. She definitely knows what’s going on – she focuses on Pete and does as asked. A joy to behold, since you always wanted an agility dog.

After class, back to town. A few weeks ago, you were bemoaning the fact that there wasn’t enough fiction, nor were there enough kid’s books. Now you have more than enough. It was a good thing, you thought, that you consolidated the books on hand; otherwise, there would not be enough room at the Meeting House for the additional books.

And as usual, after you got a case of the post-book, afternoon jitters. Where, you are wondering, where are these books going to go, and when?

Pete assisted you in unloading the books and then went and had a beer with his friend John DePriest. You continued to sort. A good thing because now you won’t have to do any more of this until Tuesday.
