January 23, 2021: Shadow’s Dog Blog

Hi everyone, Shadow here, checking in so you all can see how I am doing. Alys is writing this up for me since I don’t have thumbs. I also can’t read, so I am once again trusting her better judgement.

The winter routine here has been firmly established. First, Pete gets up and lets me out. (The days are getting longer so I am now spending less time in the dark.) Then he goes back to bed. Alys gets up a few minutes later and staggers around the house before getting ready to go out and take care of the chickens, goats, and horses.

Pete gets up and feeds Ryder and me. Then he takes me on a short walk to the roadway. I am supposed to poop. Sometimes I have already pooped, sometimes I have not yet pooped, sometimes I will poop.

Pete and I usually then head back up to the house; Alys comes up shortly thereafter. They then eat breakfast. Most of the time I hang out on the porch. If Ryder is out, she barks at whatever is going past, be it walkers or car drivers. This is her way of alerting Alys and Pete to the fact that she’s already bored and wants to be let back inside.

The pair usually spend their mornings at their respective computers. Sometimes, like today, one or the other will go somewhere and take me with them. Car rides aren’t really all that exciting, but they are way more fun than waiting on the porch for their return.

Today, Pete dropped Alys off at the recycling center. I like going there because the woman who takes money from people always gives me a treat. Okay, so the treat is a Milk Bone dog biscuit. They taste like cardboard but are better than nothing.

Next, Pete went to school and worked there on his computer. He could have worked at home, but right now Alys doesn’t have a car, so he’s taking her places. When she does get a car, I will get to go with her.

Pete went and picked up Alys in the early afternoon. They then took books to the place where Alys works. I heard them talking about going for a ride and getting us dogs out. I was so pleased to hear this that I hopped in the front seat and licked her face.

Yes, we did go on an outing when we got home, one that of course included Ryder. Pete and Alys saddled up Raudi and Tyra and off we went.

More than anything, I like running in the woods with Rainbow. She’s the most happy when she trees a squirrel. She located three of them today. Me, I could take or leave the squirrels, but it does add a much-needed diversion to the same old same old.

We came home – it was then feeding time. Nothing like a good meal after an afternoon run, unless it’s two meals. I would like to finish off Ryder’s food for her, but smart Pete, he feeds me outside and her inside.

There most likely won’t be a dog blog tomorrow because tomorrow is most likely to be the same as today.
