August 2, 2021: Son of Heatwave

Heatwaves seem to have their own personalities. This one has compassion; meaning that it isn’t going off the chart in terms of the temperature. The thermometers, at 4 p.m. had the same readings as yesterday, the lower quadrant thermometer in the shade was 79˚F and the upper quadrant thermometer in the sun was 89˚F. Fortunately, it remained a dry heat today. Oddly enough, there were no storm clouds or thunderstorms, which is the norm around here when it gets hot.

This heat wave also has a summer feel about it. It’s good for the plants; although we are running low on water in the tanks that hold the horse and garden water.

Shadow at Claudia's

And, of course, I continue to worry about fires. I am most fearful about the smoke, which would be bad for Tinni’s lungs. Finally, I have gotten him to the point where he is no longer gurgling. I’m feeding him soaked hay, and he’s getting medication for his arthritis and for his thyroid. Today he did the best he’s done in a long time out on the trail.

Civilization encroaches – the lower portion of Siggi’s trail has been torn up by four wheelers, individuals who had no specific plan and just drove where they damn well feel like it.

Took Shadow to agility class today. Pete worked with her. The dog just knows what to do and does it. Agility is easy for her. There were just three dogs in the class, so Pete and Shadow got plenty of airtime.

I’m looking forward to having the backyard dog agility course set up, this will be in the playground of higher learning. I did work on stay, which required no at home obstacles. Shadow must have retained what I taught her because she breezed through the stay/let’s go sequence at Claudia’s.

There was a bit of shade in Claudia’s Playground of Higher Learning. We stuck with it. There was a woman and a dog, a Burmese Mountain Dog and a poodle cross. They did not do really well. The woman was shrill, and the dog was inattentive. A bad combination. Liam and his mixed breed dog, Cody, rounded out the class. The pair, as always, did just fine, a testimony to having taken the previous level skills class several times.

We also dropped the newspaper box off at the Alaska State Fairgrounds. We beat the rush hour traffic, but not the heat. Makes me wonder if Pat, Pete’s brother, would like the weather we are having.

Next: 213. 8/3/21: Abundance
